You can stop mailing me about this now. No, really.

To the English speaker: I blog in English. Yes, my writing isn’t exactly at native speaker level , my choice of words might be less fortunate, my using of the tenses precarious, my spelling faulty. I’m aware of this and deal with it by improving. Deal with it too. After all, you’re not forced to come back, and yet, your letter showed you’ve read at least 90% of what I wrote.
To the Romanians: I blog in English. It’s not because I want to show off my knowledge of the lingua franca or because I find Romanian not good enough for my taste. And I’m not touching the “you’re half Hungarian, it figures”, not even with a ten meter pole. I choose not to write in Romanian because it’s safer. I work at a real hospital, I write about real people - patients, docs, other psychologists. Just think what would happen if people would find out about this blog (hint: Dooce). Thank God most of the people that went to school before ‘75 learned mainly French, Russian and German, or I would have to either resort to Hungarian or restrict my content to mommyblogging, sharing recipes and telling you about my newest family in Sims 2. Oh, and I’d post pictures of kittens. Lots of kittens. Gah.

Who ever is giving you a hard time about your english you can tell to bug off. Your english writing is better than most native english bloggers I read! Don’t let people get to you that much! You do a great job.

  2. Mist1:

I am worried about my English now. I haven’t noticed an error in your grammar. Crap, I hope I don’t need remedial English as my first language classes.

By the way, I always wanted to be Romanian. I was a gymnast growing up and I knew that I would have been so much better if I could have worked out with Aurelia Dobre.

    *sigh*

  3. Emily:

Yep, same brand of creepos over here.

    Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Becky:

umm hello…I sometimes think you speak english better than me…and I love your blog..keep on blogging…and don’t worry about anyone else :D

  5. admin:

Thank you girls - I make dozens of mistakes but they usually get caught when I re-read the posted material. Mist, the name of the place you’ll have to visit if you ever get to Ro is Deva - home of the best gymnast school in the world .

  6. Mrs. S:

I am all confused… I like your writing, and I couldn’t tell you weren’t a native English speaker… I thought it was one of a few different languages you knew, but then I haven’t got around to reading the archives yet.

I am also confused as to why people care WHICH of the however-many-languages-you-know you write in. I mean, why do they care? I write in English ’cause it’s easy for me, you write in English ’cause you want to improve and for a bit of anonymity… why is this a problem for anyone!?

Bah. They’re all whackos. You, my dear, are wonderful and you should keep writing - in whichever language you like.

  7. Sabila:

Just discoverd your blog and I’ll surely be returning! Thanks for blogging in English.

  8. Romanul:

Mrs.S  you just dont get it, do you? Romanians and hungarians are natural born enemys. Of course she is writting in English. She hates Romanian language because her hungarian blood is making her so.Do your homework next time before posting a stupid coment.

  9. Peter:

I wanted many times to express my admiration for your command of the english language (as well as the quality of your blog), but I was afraid to sound too sycophant…

  10. Mrs. S:

I’m sorry, I’m definitely not trying to start anything, I just HAVE to say that I think it’s HILARIOUS that someone who said you write in English because “your Hungarian blood makes you hate Romanians” is saying MY comment is stupid. *giggles*

I haven’t had a good laugh all day, and I definitely needed one!

I hope you got my point, which was merely that I like your blog, and I’m glad it’s in English so I can read it.

  11. admin:

Another round of thanks for the support, guys. As for you, Romanule - nope, still not touching it.

  12. Sandra:

You know me, i’d still try to read your blogs even if you did write in Romanian. But as soon as you start writing Hungarian i’d give up. I might drop by though to get a first-hand account of all the latest ‘gossip’. And i can testify that your spoken english is as flawless. Then again, not being a native speaker myself i might not hear the mistakes of course…… :-(

  13. onetallmomma:

In my humble opinion you write in English far better then most of the blog writers that I read. You have no need to apologize for your use of the language.

And a Big Happy Birthday to your beautiful daughter.

Numai in franceza sa nu scrii fato!
