WordPress, Movable Type or else?
I’m at loss with this weblog. I had WordPress’s Akismet spam catcher plugin for a long time until our hosting company started sending me angry emails about the fact that a huge part of their memory was occupied by the spammers’ battle with Akismet. Okay, I turned that off, found a Captcha plugin and y’all had to write the little numbers and letters inside the box. Not much time passed until spam started reappearing - it outsmarted the Captcha. Plus the hosting company started shouting again about resource overuse. So I turned off the Captcha, and spam started flowing in, at a rate of approx. 25 comments /day .
So now only logged in users can comment. Which is a nuisance, and I know it. I’m considering switching to Movable Type, installing any plugin that you tell me about and that works against spam effectively or shutting down the blog altogether . Ideas (either as comments here or mailed) are very much welcomed.
I use wordpress as well, and I just went into the settings and then into the discussion settings and clicked the box that says “users must have a previously approved comment” and also the one that says “any comment with more than two links will be held” and while I still have to moderate the comments and delete the spam, I found it easier than making people log in (once you sort through and approve one comment from all of your regulars). Not sure if you’ve already tried this, but that’s what I’ve been doing. It doesn’t stop them from trying to spam me, but at least I can keep it from appearing on my site
That’s total junk, Akismet uses practically no system resources, so for your host to blame the problem on that shows an a strong lack of competence on their part. Do you mind sharing who you host with?
Mrs.S - I did the same for months - there weren’t any spams appearing on site after I introduced this, but there were so many comments held for moderation it was roughly the same headache.
